Coding complications of care can be challenging, particularly postoperative complications. The Official Coding Guidelines and ICD-10-CM have specific instructions that require assignment of complication codes in many situations regardless of physician documentation. In other situations, specific physician documentation is necessary before a complication code can be assigned. Participants at this session will learn a consistent approach for accurately assigning complication of care codes based on clinical and coding guidelines with illustrative case examples.
